Bank Fishing Locations

New Platt Fisheries Bank Fishing Area Information

This document is designed to help members with tips and safety advice related to bankside and casting platform fishing locations, sectioned bank by bank from the lodge. The use of What3Words (W3W) provides locations around the lake to within 3sqm enabling members to find the exact location. The W3W App is widely used by fisheries and can be downloaded Here for Apple and Here for Android

Simply speak the three words into the App and you will be directed to the bank location

Lodge Location for reference ///croaking.taped.stunning

BEWARE – many areas of the lake drop away sharply and great care should be taken when considering wading. Tread carefully and slowly and it’s recommended to go no deeper than waist height

EASTERN BANK (turning right with lodge to your back)

Old Wood Pool Eastern Bank ///estimates.wiser.coverage – Map Area H

This is a nicely fenced off area where anglers have priority over walkers

There is good wading directly out from then bank towards the island with a raised sand area some 20m or so out, though water will be deeper between it and the bank. This will enable access to some good fishing casting towards the island

Additionally, casting to the north (right) into small bay often delivers fish when the area is not too weedy, but beware of the sharp drop-off in this area

Fenced off area East Bank with casting platform W3W ///rejoined.tonal.gather Map Area G

This area has a west facing casting platform which enables fishing towards the northern island and in the shallower margins to north and south of the east bank. Care should be taken to ensure  you maintain a sure footing. This platform is covered with chicken wire to provide a better gripping surface. Wellies or boots are recommended

Further North on East Bank W3W ///ticket.kicks.reprints – Map Area F

Waders are required in this area called the shallows. Fishing may be difficult beyond springtime due to weed growth. In some years this area has held a good head of fish but it varies annually dependant on temperature, weather and time of year. In low water months it is easy to wade out long distances to find fish

NORTH BANK

The northern bank varies dramatically in depth from  the shallows to the East (Map Area F) to the deeper areas in the West (Map Area E). All bank casting is southerly which can be problematic in a prevailing southerly wind. However, careful wading can open up extensive fishing along this bank enabling cast to be made westerly or easterly and drifting flies towards the margins. Some of the locations below are work in progress and subject to work party day clearance to fully open them up

W3W ///dreamers.cabbies.wished – Map Area F

This is a wading area only, facing south (often into wind) but chance to fish the fringes of the northern shore where food gathers in a southerly or south-westerly wind

Opposite north island W3W ///employers.grandest.hung Map Area F

This area offers a Casting Platform and careful wading area facing south  (often into wind) but chance to fish the margins and under the trees of the northern shore where food gathers in a southerly or south-westerly wind

W3W ///repeated.calendars.crunched – Map Area E

Wading to thigh or waist height is possible in a historically very good fishing area from boats fishing towards the bank. Casting to south can be difficult in wind. Casting west and east (wind dependant) gives opportunity to fish closer to the bank than in a boat, drifting flies towards overhanging trees

W3W ///kinks.composes.renamed – Map Area E

Very similar to above

W3W ///units.shuttling.suitably – Map Area E

Small area close to path which requires some work and may not be accessible until summer 2024. Wading would be thigh to waist but again, good opportunity to fish East and West along the fringes

WEST BANK

Bank fishing along the west bank is severely restricted due to the proximity of the path and the density of the treeline overhanging the water

W3W///pencils.encrusted.compliant – Map Area B

The grassy bank halfway down the western bank is a prime bank and wading area

Care is needed due to proximity of the path. The sandy bank offers opportunity to wade quite far away from path, thigh to waist height, but care should be taken as it does then drop away quite sharply

This has historically been a good area with the angler able to fan cast from north-east to south-west. The deeper area to the west has produced some good fishing along the deeper margins

SOUTH BANK

The south bank offers several areas of fenced off or isolated fishing away from the path. The small bays along this bank are generally fished from the boat, but careful casting can open up some productive bank fishing

W3W ///monopoly.carry.vowed – Map Area B

Bay near Old Wood Pool (South) and sand works

Be mindful of proximity of path and walkers and it is recommended to wade at least 20m on the gently graded sandy area for good wading at thigh to waist height. However, care must be taken when trying to fish the deeper areas of western (deep channel) bank as the lake bed drops away quickly to 8ft+

Old Wood Pool – (South Bank) W3W ///exhaled.third.waltz – Map Area B

Fenced off area and safe from pedestrian path with priority for anglers

Shallow gently grading sandy bed giving access to edge of lake deep channel running south to north as well as to bay on south shore. Good casting area due to southerly and westerly prevailing winds and large backdrop

W3W ///ordinary.instructs.masks – Map Area B

Wade only in margins with care in this area as lake shelves off quickly. Fish along the edges of this bank (back casting almost impossible due to trees) as fish use deep shelf looking for invertebrates and damsel nymphs

This are should generally be free from walkers who should give way to anglers

W3W ///padlock.cadet.school – Map Area A

Bank fishing opportunities in cleared area with careful wading to thigh and waist height but be careful of drop off to 5ft plus

Fishing access west towards birch tree and east to small bay (can get weedy at times)

Work party weed and woody debris clearance. Bay currently very heavily weeded to recent northerly winds

W3W ///signified.barrel.intervals – Map Area A

This area varies in fishing quality due to proximity to boat jetty and regular disturbance as a result, but worth a try from platform when wind conditions enable easier casting
